The Lesser Butterfly Orchid  Platanthera bifolia was described by LINNÉ in 1753, this was a delicate Scandinavian plant. Later, strong Butterfly Orchids, as they are found in Central and Southern Europe, were separated as a separate species Platanthera fornicata (BAB.) BUTTLER or subspecies Platanthera bifolia subsp. latifolia (DREJER) LOJTNANT. But as result of genetic research, such as carried out in 2024 in cooperation between the University of Heidelberg and the AHO Baden-Württemberg, the strong and the delicate specimens proved to be indistinguishable. The name Platanthera solstitialis BÖNNINGH. ex RCHB. 1830, which was often used in the past for the strong clan is invalid, it was published without description and illustration, and was used in the past for various Central European Platanthera clans.
In addition to the Lesser Butterfly Orchid in Central Europe also the Greater Butterfly Orchid Platanthera chlorantha and Müller's Butterfly Orchid Platanthera pervia can be found.
