Ophrys melitensis is an endemism of the Maltesian islands Malte and Gozo. As a species it has been described by SALKOWSKI in 1992. The pollinating insect is Chalicodoma sicula, as SALKOWSKI found out in 2000. This is a hint on close relationschip with the group of Ophrys bertolonii, because the orchids of the bertolonii group are also pollinated by bees of genus Chalicodoma.
