The long before well-known species has been described in 1999 by HERMOSILLA. The emphasis of its spreading lies in the Northern Spanish region La Rioja.

In the second edition 2001 of his field guide DELFORGE uses the name Ophrys quadriloba for the species. The quadriloba description from 1851 has been done from the French departement Alpes Maritimes. Delforge states that he has knowledge of similar orchids in Catalunya and the French Corbières. In addition still around 1970 two sites of orchids like this shall have existed in departement Alpes Maritimes, which don't exist any longer.
But other authors, e.g. Hannes F. PAULUS, consider Ophrys quadriloba to be the hybrid between Ophrys lutea and Ophrys sphegodes.
