Ophrys promontorii is growing in the mountains of central and southern Italy. It got its name from the Promontorio del Gargano, where it can be found in big numbers. Some authors assume a hybridogene origin from Ophrys incubacea and the Sicilian Ophrys lunulata. As all relatives of Ophrys lunulata it is pollinated by a mason bee, in this case Osmia mustelina.
